A rare opportunity in the Puerto Rico holiday resort to rent a front line apartment in Portonovo just yards from the front for easy walking, direct from the owner. Most of the Portonovo apartments are timeshare but this holiday rental apartment is privately owned and just 30 yards from the Marina.
Puerto Rico is situated on the southern coast of Gran Canaria. The coastline is open to the Atlantic Ocean, but Puerto Rico itself lies sheltered and cosseted in its own protective valley shelving down to the sea. For 365 days of the year, with very little change, Puerto Rico enjoys consistent hours of sunshine and warmth, with a delightful atmosphere which is soft and without marauding hosts of midges and mosquitoes, which can so easily spoil a holiday abroad.
PRIVATE RENTAL APARTMENT (NOT a Time-share)
Our apartment at Portonovo is on the second floor, in the centre of the complex directly overlooking the main Marina, no more than 30 to 40 yards away and is one of the most sought after locations in the Canary Islands. The apartment has one twin bedded room, with two wardrobes, long mirror and dressing table, a comfortable lounge and kitchen area separated by a partition housing a breakfast bar and a bathroom with every facility.
Both the bedroom and the lounge overlook the sea. The apartment is generally well furnished in traditional Spanish style, and every main facility that helps to make for an enjoyable and comfortable stay. The balcony, large enough for two sunloungers together with table and chairs, attracts sunshine from dawn to dusk and there is a full-length sunblind for shade during the day.
Large swimming pool
A perfect place for leisurely sunbathing, is beside the large heated pool, which is just to the left, directly below our apartment at Puerto Novo. It is generally uncrowded and a delight for swimmers as well as leisurely bathing.
Puerto Rico Grand Canaria information
The white sandy beach, just a few minutes away from our apartment is manicured daily and there is now a large secondary beach, which can be reached by a pleasant 20 minutes' walk or so just around the sea wall. Bathing in the sea is both safe and protected because of Gran Canaria's position (in the middle of the Gulf Stream and a few degrees from the Equator), the sea is pleasantly fresh and relatively warm all the year round.
Next to the beach is the Marina, which houses a large variety of craft in addition to the main port, directly opposite our apartment. A boat can be chartered to enjoy a day's fishing for Marlin or maybe Swordfish in the deep sea off Puerto Rico, where many game fish abound. From the two Marinas, yachts and sailing boats are available for hire or charter.
You will also find schools for water skiing, windsurfing and scuba diving. Only a short distance away there are facilities for tennis, squash, racquetball, golf and horse riding. There is also camel riding on the sand dunes at the next main resort.
If you are searching for cool solitude, hire a car and drive up into the hills. The journey inland brings a dramatic and beautiful change of scenery with mountainous views, pine forests and many small enchanting villages. Fruit crops abound, so enjoy your pick of fresh bananas, lemons, grapes, oranges, tomatoes and avocados, and don't forget the local wines…..both good and inexpensive! Wherever you go there are many wayside cafes and restaurants offering a variety of food in Spanish or touristico style, a good standard of hygiene and very friendly service, particularly if you manage to achieve the odd word of Spanish….the local people love you to try! However, for leisurely sunbathing, relax at the side of our large heated pool which is just to the left, directly below our apartment at Portonovo and is generally uncrowded and a delight for swimmers as well as leisurely bathing.
There is a generous choice of cafes and restaurants in the close proximity of our apartment and many more at the Commercial Centre, some 15 to 20 minutes' walk inland. There, if you like to be entertained, the centre is bubbling with nightlife suitable for all ages.
Although Puerto Rico is a busy place, there are many restrictions at night on noise and in the port area, in particular, is subject to a controlled environment so that sleeping hours are not disturbed by clubs and loud music.
Rental rate:
First week £315, subsequent weeks £290 per week (inclusive of two persons). Larger discounts available for longer letting periods.
Unfortunately, we regret we are only able to accept couples over 40 years of age, since our friends' and guests' range is aimed at the closer to retired persons, who enjoy the idea of a home rather than just a place to sleep on holiday!

There is very little sand at all on Tenerife: it is a volcanic island
and is mostly volcanic ash or cinders along the coastal path with outcrops of rocks or pebbles going down to the sea (for instance Pebble Beach . . . ). Having said that many people sunbathe on the rocks and children often play on the pebbles though sandy it is not -- sand has to be imported from the Sarah desert to make beaches on Tenerife!! Los Gigantes is one of those places . . .
